  • Epson C6500 label printers installed in London production centre

Based in Islington, London, Pasta Evangelists use printed labels to provide information about the allergens and ingredients of pasta recipes, which are selected and bought by customers who prepare their pasta menu at home. Previously the labels for each dish were produced by a third-party printer and couriered weekly. Following their label printer investment, the labels are now created onsite and on-demand.

Supplied by Epson reseller and social enterprise Office Odyssey, the new label printers installed at Pasta Evangelists create a more streamlined production process that aligns with their mission to be a 100% zero-waste business by 2025. According to a report from Smithers, if European businesses switched to using on-demand inkjet labelling, energy savings of 28.7 million kWh could be achieved each year, the equivalent of lighting 95,960 homes and equal to a reduction of 6.7 million tonnes of CO 2. On-demand inkjet printing can also eliminate 180 million square metres of label waste, the equivalent covering of 25,264 football pitches, and will cut ink waste by an estimated 619 tonnes, the equivalent weight of 41 double decker buses.

Chris Rennoldson, Co-Founder and COO for Pasta Evangelists, comments: “One of the main benefits of switching to inhouse printing is that we no longer have wasted labels. Previously we would have over ordered labels with the legally required information about the ingredients and allergens of our products. We couldn't afford to risk running out. Yet with a weekly rotating menu we would be left with excess labels that we had to throw away. I would estimate that typically 20% of labels would be thrown away. Now there is no waste.”

Another benefit is shorter lead times, “We previously had to provide artwork with at least 72 hours lead time. Now we can make changes and print instantly. This is particularly valuable with current supply chain difficulties, which can lead us to making last minute changes to some of our recipes.”

The team are also enjoying a cleaner and more organised production environment. Adds Chris: “We no longer have an entire bank of shelves dedicated to storing labels!”

The products installed include the Epson C6500 with rewinder system.
